HMD Globaljust announced a new Nokia-branded phone bound for Chinaunder the X-series moniker. Its most recognizable feature is a notched 5.8-inch FHD+ (2280 x 1080) display with 19:9 aspect ratio with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective layer. Overall, the front of a Nokia X6 will be 95 percent screen with metal frames that come in blue, black, and silver variants.
The Nokia X6 is powered by a Snapdragon 636 SoC (system-on-chip), 4GB of RAM, and 32 or 64GB of internal storage. A higher-end model exists with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. But don’t worry, all models receive microSD card slots and back-mounted fingerprint sensors. USB-C is the only port on the X6, capable of delivering Quick Charge 3.0, or 50 percent charge in 30 minutes.
The camera setup is intriguing since there’s a front-facing 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture (face unlock included). On the back, there’s another f/2.0 16MP sensor, paired with a smaller 5-megapixel monochrome sensor with f/2.2 lens. All the cameras have the usual suite of phone AI trickery, like background blur and face recognition.
The Nokia X6’s makers are promising Android P sometime after launch, so the X6 will debut with the current stable Android 8.1 Oreo build.
The notched phone will debut on May 21st in China, starting at 1,299 yuan ($204) for the entry-level 4GB / 32GB model. The midrange 4GB / 64GB version will go for 1,449 yuan ($236), while the top-tier Nokia X6 (6GB / 64GB) will retail for 1,699 yuan ($266).
No availability has been announced outside of China.
